Selma is a name used in manifold ways. As a name for products, animals and places it’s been a source of amazement in my childhood. Later on my international first name gave me a temporary sense of belonging to an otherwise alien world whenever I was travelling and in contact with other cultures.

With the project “Schöne Aussicht” (“Lovely View") (www.selma.name.tr) which I realized on the occasion of my Iaab grant (2005/06) in Istanbul the name “Selma” created a common bond between my home country and Turkey, had me get into contact with women from Istanbul and initiate a transnational exchange.

With the title “Schöne Aussicht” (“Lovely View”) – one of the possible meanings of my name – I’ve invited to participate in my project. Those Selmas from Istanbul interested had the possibility to have their photo taken at a location of their own choice.

By means of homepage, flyers and press release the project was being spread. The 15 Selmas participating in my project chose an individual vantage point for their shooting.

Besides the photographs videos were made where the women gave information about themselves, about their name and their motives to participate in the project.
